Large diesel-electric submarine

Mission

Project 636 large diesel-electric submarine armed with Club-S system is designed to destroy enemy submarines, surface warships and vessels.

Features

Project 636 submarine is a follow-on development of the well-known Project 877EKM submarine. It retains all the advantages of its predecessor but stands out owing to the parameter improvements:

  • enhanced-power diesel generators;
  • increased submerged full speed;
  • snorkeling range increased to 7,500 n. m.;
  • noise level reduced by introducing new equipment with better shock-absorbing means;
  • submarine is equipped with more efficient air ventilation and conditioning systems designed for operations in different regions of the World Ocean.

Armament

The submarine high combat effectiveness is achieved due to integration of the Club-S-636 guided-missile system, which enables, along with the Lama-EKM action information system, to fire the 3M-54E anti-ship cruise missiles against surface ships and the 3M-14E cruise missiles against land-based targets in the remotest part of an enemy territory.

The anti-ship missile capability of engaging surface targets at the range of 220 km makes the submarine inaccessible for defensive enemy’s anti-submarine warfare (ASW) weapon. The range of fire against shore-based installations, which is 275 km, enables to deliver missile fire while being beyond the ASW coastal zone and excludes a necessity to cross mine-treat areas.
