A number of official visits have been made at the level of heads of governments and ministries. In May 1997, the Supreme Head (King) of Malaysia, Tuanku Jaafar, paid an unofficial visit to St. Petersburg.

On August 5 and October 17, 2003, Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Malaysia with an official visit, whereas on June 18, 2007, Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi arrived in Moscow with a return visit. On October 10, 2007 the first Malaysian astronaut was sent to the International Space Station, under the contract with Rosoboronexport and in accordance with the Russian-Malaysian intergovernmental agreement.

Military-technical cooperation between the two countries began in 1994, when a contract for the supply of MiG-29 fighters to Malaysia was signed, and has been developing dynamically since then. The adoption of the Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the field of defence, defence technologies and defence industry, as well as the formation of the joint Russian-Malaysian Intergovernmental Commission in 1999 was a very significant event.

Rosoboronexport is a regular participant of the International Exhibition of Aerospace and Marine Equipment “LIMA”, which takes place in Langkawi every 2 years.

There is a representative office of the State Corporation Rostec in Malaysia, which ensures the interests of Rosoboronexport.
