Russia and India set up a joint venture to produce Smerch ROCKET projectiles for Indian Army
05.09.2012 Press release

On 27th August 2012 in the capital of India, New Delhi, the JSC «Rosoboronexport» teamed with the JSC Splav Scientific Production Association and the Ordnance Factory Board, Ministry of Defence, Government of India, signed a Memorandum on cooperation in organising production and after-sale servicing of rocket projectiles for the Russian Smerch multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) on the territory of India.

The signed agreement provides for the transfer of a complete set of rocket projectile production technologies to a Russian-Indian joint venture being now formed.

Both Parties will adhere in their work to current legislation of the Russian Federation and the Republic of India, and will take all necessary measures to protect information and materials containing confidential information.

The signing of the Memorandum on cooperation in production and after-sale servicing of Smerch MLRS rocket projectiles corroborates the fact that the Indian-Russian military technical cooperation is based on large-scale projects and mutual trust, friendship and top-level geopolitical strategic partnership.

Both countries have been strengthening their well-established interstate relations gradually and on a mutually beneficial basis. By adopting Russian defence technologies India manages to quickly master what takes other states decades to do. A substantial increase of the Indian industry’s share in the development and production of Russian-origin military equipment for the Indian Army and Navy corresponds to the national interests of both states.

At present the JSC «Rosoboronexport», JSC Splav Scientific Production Association and the Ordnance Factory Board, Ministry of Defence, Government of India, are actively engaged in developing a business plan for the joint venture.
