The BTR-22 is designed for transporting mechanized infantry personnel to the battlefield, their fire support, as well as for transporting military cargo and towing trailers, and is a wheeled combat armored amphibious vehicle with a front-mounted powertrain and a rear-mounted troop compartment.
The main armament mounted on the BTR-22 includes a 30 mm automatic gun and a coaxial 7.62 mm machine gun, stabilized in two planes. The gunner's sight is a combined one with daytime and thermal imaging channels, a laser rangefinder and an independent line of sight in the vertical plane, supporting search, detection, recognition and aimed fire from the APC armament.
The BTR-22 is fitted with new thermal imaging sights and observation devices for the driver, gunner and commander, a video surveillance system with video cameras, an Azart radio station, a 5 kW diesel generator, a new diesel engine, a package of protective slat and mesh screens, a set of upper hemisphere protection and electronic warfare facilities to combat UAVs.
